Life Skills: The Art of Living

Overview

We’ll go on an 8 week journey of personal discovery & growth in a supportive and positive atmosphere. Through discussion, personal reflections, experiential exercises, and simple everyday home practices, we’ll work on growing awareness of ourselves, our meaning & purpose, what we really want and how to get it. We’ll also look at the obstacles currently keeping us stuck, identify and build our personal strengths, and design practical strategies to empower ourselves and get unstuck.

This course is delivered online via Zoom.

Course structure

Week 1

Where are you right now?

In Week 1 we’ll introduce some key concepts & exercises from Life Coaching & Personal Development, starting with the Wheel of Life. We’ll work through some coaching tools to assess the here & now, get a broad snapshot of our life today, evaluate each area, and identify opportunities for growth.

Week 2

What’s important to you?

In Week 2 we’ll identify and define our core Values to construct an authentic Compass pointing to our unique True North. This clarity enables the centering and confidence to begin to evaluate all life’s decisions big & small.

Building on this new-found capacity to discern & direct ourselves authentically we’ll next turn our attention to our everyday life and look at how we’re in alignment or misalignment in each area. We will begin to consider practical immediate actions to align to our Values and the direction of our internal Compass.

Week 3

Where do you want to go next? What’s your purpose?

Having looked at our core Values, what we truly care about, we’ll next turn outward and identify the point on the horizon to set the direction of our Compass. We’ll do this by defining our own authentic definition of Success and unique Vision for our best life beyond what we are conditioned to believe it is. This will enable us to set clear meaningful goals and begin to map the road we’ll travel.

Week 4

What’s stopping you?

In Week 4, we’ll begin to examine what’s stopping us from living our best life. As we set out we’ll begin to map the challenging terrain of our journey. We’ll examine the obstacles, limiting beliefs, fixed mindsets, sabotaging behaviours & negative habit patterns, defenses, maladaptive strategies, resistances and universal fears holding us back.

Week 5

How to get unstuck?

After growing our understanding of these different inhibiting obstacles from Week 4, we’ll next explore their antidotes. We’ll discover our natural resources & personal strengths. We’ll design alternative empowering beliefs and growth mindsets supporting & enabling us to go directly through the obstacles that have limited our growth so far.

Week 6

What is a healthy flourishing balanced human being?

In Week 6 we’ll step back to a wider perspective and consider what universally physical, emotional, mental & spiritual health is for a contemporary human being. We’ll be guided by contemporary neuroscience and psychology to ensure we’re supporting our personal projects with healthy practices.

In the second part of this class we’ll consider scientific & psychological factors that universally undermine growth, such as different stressors, triggers, and lifestyle practices.

Week 7

Make a clear actionable realistic plan & goals

In Week 7 we’ll bring all this new learning and personal insight together. We’ll design meaningful goals, create a realistic actionable plan, and then explore how best to implement it in a specific and concrete way that aligns to our Values & Vision.

Week 8

A New Beginning.

In Week 8 we’ll look toward the future and how we can maintain momentum towards the meaningful goals we’ve defined throughout the course. We’ll consider the most effective way forward & how to implement our plans. We’ll also consider what supports we can draw on and how to best integrate these coaching principles into life long habits.

My name is Joel Whitman. I’m a professional Life Coach & Mindfulness Teacher. My background is in Philosophy and my research was concerned with the contemporary & practical pursuit of wisdom. I’m passionate about its intersection with contemporary psychology & personal development. My approach is to support people in connecting to their genuine meaning & purpose and to discover & design a life that is aligned with what’s truly important to them.
